Documents You Need for CASCO: From the Quote to the Claim File
What data and documents to prepare for a CASCO quote, what happens when you sign the contract, and what to keep for a claim file.

For a CASCO quote from GENERAL Asigurări you prepare the vehicle's registration details, its value, the list of approved drivers and the options you want. When the contract is signed, the insurer inspects the vehicle; while the policy runs you keep certain documents, and at a claim the authorities' paperwork and the car's documents both matter. Here is what you need at every stage, for any of the three CASCO variants: Standard, Avantaj 50/50, or with the additional Accident clause.
What details do you prepare for a quote?
For an accurate CASCO quote, declare correctly: the vehicle details from the registration certificate, its value, how it is used, the approved drivers and their driving experience, any extra equipment you want included, and other insurance policies or risk circumstances. The more precise the data, the more accurately the quote reflects your final premium.
You also choose the variant that fits you: AUTOCASCO Standard (the insured sum covers the full vehicle value from the start), AUTOCASCO Avantaj 50/50 (a lower premium, with an initial insured sum of 50% of the real value), or AUTOCASCO with the additional Accident clause, which adds cover for the driver and passengers on top of the vehicle itself.
What happens when the contract is signed?
Before cover begins, the insurer inspects the vehicle — the CASCO contract has no effect before the inspection and payment of the premium or first instalment. The vehicle must have valid documents, including the periodic technical inspection (ITP): using a vehicle without a valid ITP or certificate can lead to a refused or reduced payout.
Under the Avantaj 50/50 variant, the insured sum at signing is only 50% of the vehicle's real value. You can later adjust it to full value by signing an additional agreement with the insurer and paying the corresponding extra premium. If an event happens before that adjustment, you must request the increase agreement within 7 working days of the event — otherwise the payout is calculated proportionally or may be refused.
What documents do you keep while the policy runs?
Keep the policy and the contract, the registration certificate, and the declared keys and remote controls — a theft claim is examined only if you present the registration certificate, the keys and the remotes. So never leave them in the vehicle. Notify the insurer in writing if you lose or have these documents or keys stolen, and about any change in how the vehicle is used, kept or registered.
Also keep in mind that the payout is calculated after deducting a contractual deductible: 10% of the insured sum for a total loss or theft, or 10% of the damage amount (minimum EUR 150) starting from the 4th at-fault or unidentified claim recorded during the policy. The deductible has nothing to do with the documents you submit, but it affects the final amount you receive — check it in your contract before estimating a payout.
What documents do you need for a claim?
For any event: call the police, the fire brigade or the competent authority and keep the documents they issue — for damage without official documents, the payout is limited under the contract.

Notify GENERAL Asigurări: theft within 24 hours, damage within 7 calendar days of receiving the documents. The full steps are on the How to file a claim page.
If the repair is planned abroad, notify the insurer before the repair starts and follow the instructions you receive — otherwise the costs risk not being recognised as part of the insured event. This rule is separate from the general notification deadlines and applies specifically to foreign repair shops.
What extra documents does the Accident clause require?
If you chose the AUTOCASCO variant with the additional Accident clause, for an event that injures the driver or passengers of the insured vehicle you prepare, in addition to the usual CASCO documents: the claim request, the injured person's ID, the medical records and investigations confirming the injury, the police report on the road accident, and, in case of death or disability, the documents confirming this and the documents of the beneficiary named in the policy or of the legal heirs.
Notification deadlines under the Accident clause are shorter than for ordinary vehicle damage: you notify the insurer within 5 days of the accident for an injury, and within 48 hours for a death. The accident indemnity is set according to the indemnity tables and the insured sum stated in the clause, and it is paid without applying the deductible.
What documents do you need if you sell the car or cancel the policy?
If you sell the insured vehicle, you must notify GENERAL Asigurări in writing about the transfer of ownership, together with supporting sale documents. The CASCO contract terminates by law one month after the transfer, unless you or the new owner apply to have the policy reissued in the new owner's name.
To cancel the policy on request, send a written notice to C.A. "GENERAL ASIGURĂRI" S.A at least 14 days before the date you want the contract to end. The premium for the unused period is refunded after you return the policy or contract, minus a 35% administration fee; it is not refunded if claims have been or are due to be paid, or if the policy has already been in force for more than 10 months.
What to remember
- For the quote: the vehicle's details and value, the approved drivers, the options and the chosen variant — Standard, Avantaj 50/50, or with the Accident clause.
- At signing: the vehicle inspection plus valid documents (including the ITP); under Avantaj 50/50, any adjustment of the insured sum must be requested within 7 working days of an event.
- While the policy runs: the registration certificate, keys and remotes — never left in the car; the deductible (10% of the sum or of the damage, minimum EUR 150) is subtracted from the payout.
- At a claim: official documents plus notification within 24 hours (theft) / 7 days (damage) / 5 days or 48 hours (Accident clause).
- When selling the car or cancelling: written notice to the insurer; a cancellation notice 14 days in advance, with a 35% administration fee withheld from any refund.
- Request a CASCO quote online — the specialists will get back to you with the calculation.
